Important things to remember

Be aware of the speed limits

On the ring road – route 1 – is 90kmh while on gravel roads it is 80kmh, reducing to 30-50kmh in populated areas.

Headlights

No matter what time of day or year you are driving the headlights must be on at all times.

Respect the Landscape

Off road driving in Iceland is strictly forbidden. The delicate environment can take decades to recover from damage so you must remember to drive only on marked roads and trails. Some roads may be closed off using nothing more than a row of small rocks.

Drink driving

Driving after the consumption of alcohol is strictly forbidden and can result in heavy fines and even the loss of your driver’s license.

Refuelling

Plan ahead when considering your fuel consumption. Even on the ring road there are long stretches of road without a fuel station.

Mileage limits

Some rental cars come with a limit on the number of miles you can cover during your rental agreement. It is good to keep an eye on this if you are given a limit, or even better completely remove this concern by choosing a rental without limits.
