Driving in Iceland
Icelanders drive on the right hand side, however, unless you are driving in the city of Reykjavik the roads are pretty quiet, and locals are generally patient. While the main Ring Road is paved, terrains can change suddenly, and the best preparation for this is having a 4×4 vehicle.
Why hire a 4×4?
4×4 vehicles can carry between five and 8 passengers, along with a lot of luggage. They offer many security features, and despite being able to undertake many different terrains they are fuel efficient.
Most rental companies require drivers to be 25 years old, however, most will accommodate drivers down to 21 years old at a small charge.
Weather in Iceland
It is important to remember that the weather can be unpredictable and harsh so it is important to exercise caution. Weather can change extremely quickly, it is often said that you can experience all four seasons in one day, so it is important to be prepared. While snow tires on regular hire cars may be sufficient in light snow conditions, a 4×4 is much more safe and reliable when the heavy winter snow sets in.
